Tips for Self-Care, Post Massage

5/17/2016

by Monika Krimendahl

RICE

Rest: the injured part of the body
Ice: wrap a warm moist towel around an ice pack and place on the injured area for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off,
           10 minutes on.
Repeat as often as you want.  It is suggested to use ice the first 2 days of the injury.
Compression: can help limit swelling and provide additional support.
Elevation: can also help decrease swelling

Hydrate: Drink More Water

Your body is made of 60% water.  In general we should try and drink half our body weight in ounces of water.
A person who weighs 150 pounds would drink 75 ounces of water a day.

Using a pinch of sea salt in your first large glass of warm water before eating anything in the morning can be very
   beneficial.

Preparing for Student Massage Therapy Clinic

5/4/2016

It's time for Student Clinic!

You've made it this far and you're almost finished.  Your Student Clinic is the final leg of your journey simulating real world experiences with paying clients.  What is a paying client?  Someone who is giving you money in exchange for your product or service; in this case, your BEST performance as a Massage Therapist.

During Student Clinic, you will create a variety of Massage Therapy sessions related to the individual client and their current state of health.  Each session is designed in accordance with your intake.

Trust your training.  You know exactly what to do!

How Do I Prepare?

Great question!  You need to prepare for success in all that you do and taking time before your clinic to set things in proper motion will support you in creating a positive and joyful experience for all involved.  Here are a few considerations:
  • Do you have enough bodies to touch?  If not, get on the phone and make requests!  In your first week of class, you began to practice "making requests" as part of your curriculum.  By now, you're a champ!  Get on it!
  • Follow up with clients before clinic to confirm payment, walk them through paying online and to support them in preparing for their session.
  • Ask people to come 5 minutes early so they can use the washroom and be ready for their session. Sessions always start on time and end on time (and sometimes start without clients!).
  • Gather your supplies.  You need enough sheets for the amount of people you are going to work on.  You will need to launder your sheets in preparation for the next day, depending on your needs.
  • Do you need Oils, Lotions or Creams?  Be sure to have non-allergenic supplies on hand and enough to support you through your clinic experience.
  • Would you like a particular music?  If you would like to provide a variety of tunes during your session, take time to set that up in advance.  While there is music onsite, you are welcome to satisfy personal taste when that taste is congruent with the spirit of the exercise.
  • Business Casual is the agreed upon dress for your clinic.  Dress appropriately and wear proper shoes to support your body during your clinic.
  • Hydrate!  Have a water bottle near by and keep it filled.  You never know when you may need a quick sip to clear your throat or to simply keep you satisfied.
  • Healthy snacks throughout the experience will support your energy levels and your mood.  Prepare ahead of time so that you can munch when you need between sessions.

Post Treatment...
When your clinic session is over, check in with your client while they're still on the table.  After that, be directive.  People need your support on next steps.  You might say,

"Thank you for coming in for your massage today!  I can not thank you enough for your support of my training.  When you're ready, you can get dressed and head to the front to complete a quick survey of your session.  I will be preparing for my next session and may not see you before you leave.  Thank you again...take your time getting up.  If you feel light headed, take a moment and move slowly.  We'll be in touch..."

When you leave the session, wash your hands, return and prepare the table and the space for the next client.  If there's time, complete your notes*.   Turn your attentions to the next session and review the intake form and prepare yourself properly.

*You are required to complete your session notes at the end of each clinic day.  You may not leave the premises until your notes are complete.

Scheduling & Paying Online

Clients are required to schedule and pay online.  Share online links with them through email and over the phone when needed.  While this is a requirement that you are to manage, some people may still have trouble.  There is no change on hand for those who insist on paying cash.  It is strongly recommended that you walk clients through the process over the phone when they're having difficulties.  Everyone is NOT tech savvy.  Hold the spirit of "no worries" and people will immediately de-stress as you support them.

Online Intake Form

Be sure in your client follow up prior to clinic that patients have completed the online form. If the form is not complete upon arrival, they are losing time in their session.  Confirm that the form is complete upon scheduling to support a smooth experience!  Any conflicts that arise with technology, know how, confusion, etc. will be kept behind the scenes.  The client experience is paramount and our commitment is to provide an extraordinary experience throughout the entire process.

Suggestions

We'd love to hear about your student clinic experience.  How'd it go?  What encouraging words do you have for new students?  Share your ideas and grow together!

Are you Making These 7 Dieting Mistakes?

4/2/2016

Health Update:

Are You Making These 7 Dieting Mistakes?

You've started a new diet. You've been good all week, making sensible meals, managing your portions, even exercising a little...then the weekend hits. You eat too much. You drink too much. You give up.

Not so fast! A couple of slip-ups won't undo all your hard work. The key is to know the dieting pitfalls you're likely to make and plan ahead to avoid them.

Here are the top seven dieting mistakes. How many are you making?
  1. Skipping breakfast.Research shows that people who don't eat breakfast actually weigh more than those who do. There's a mistaken belief that if you skip breakfast, you're saving calories. Problem is you end up snacking and eating more at other meals because you're body is so starved for food. Always begin your day with a healthy breakfast. Black coffee, an egg, whole wheat toast and a half grapefruit has only 250 calories and will stave off hunger pangs till lunch.

  2. Too many liquid calories. Did you know that a regular soda can pack on 15 pounds in one year? Not to mention lattes, fruit smoothies and alcohol. These liquid calories do little to satisfy any hunger and the calories add up fast.

  3. Not exercising. If 30 minutes is too much to even think about, start with 10 and see how it goes. If exercising is a drag to you, try something fun like bowling, playing ping-pong, or dancing. The idea is to get moving and have so much fun you'll stick with it.

  4. Using extreme diets. These don't work and can be very detrimental to your health. When you deprive your body of food two things happen: your metabolic rate slows down to make up for few calories and your desire to binge increases. In addition extreme dieting may lead to the bloating of fat cells, shrinking of muscle cells, accumulation of toxic fats and fatigue. Rather than thinking "diet" think lifestyle change.

  5. Mindless munching. Even if it's not on a plate, it still counts. A couple of cheesy crackers before dinner, test-tasting a sauce, finishing food from your kids¢ plates while washing dishes, all adds up to more calories. On average figure 25 calories per bite. Do that 4 times in a day and you've just added 100 extra calories to your waistline without even realizing it.

  6. Going overboard on low fat. It's psychological. You pick a low-fat snack and you justify eating more of it because it IS low fat. Research backs this up. More food, even if it is non- or low-fat still means more calories.

  7. Not taking vitamins and supplements. In a perfect world, we'd get all the nutrition, vitamins and minerals from our three perfectly balanced daily meals. Truth is, few of us do. Even if you think you're eating right, modern food processing can deplete whatever nutrients were in the food originally. That's why many take daily vitamins and supplements. While it's important for everyone, it's especially important for those who are trying to lose or maintain weight. It starts with a good, high-quality multivitamin.
As quickly as the pounds add up, they can also come off. The key is knowing what your pitfalls are and how to avoid them.

By Ron Maslovsky, LMT

Healing, through the practice of touch, has come from ancient customs and techniques grounded in civilizations, in the East and West, starting approximately 3,000 BCE (Before the Common Era) emerging in India.

As we head into 2015, we will explore the history of massage, its techniques and many of the other modalities that surround our massage culture, which the general public, is only seeing the tip of the ice burg today, with massages such as Swedish, Deep Tissue and Hot Stone.

Our goal is to spread knowledge, through The Massage chRONicles ™, and provide additional information about the vast array of modalities and techniques that you might have heard about, but are unfamiliar with to discuss with your clients, as well as offer them directly.

Hopefully, we can inspire you to learn more about each topic we discuss, and even become certified in a new modality, that not only continues to help your clients, but also adds to your arsenal of techniques and reasons why your clients should continue to come to you for massages and wellness treatments.

Here’s to your health and wellbeing in 2015!

Keeping it Together!

Contribution

We invite contribution and then we give thanks!  It's important to ask each person on your team what contribution they believe they could make to your projects.  While they were hired for specific roles, you may find their contribution to be much greater than you could have imagined!  Skills are sometimes like books.  They can be put on the shelf for a while and even forgotten.  Then, when given the opportunity, people bring their talents fully and freely to contribute to each activity.  As such, contribution is not personal, rather, it lives in community!  It's a great way to keep "work" a fulfilling part of life!

Over the course of a busy day, it can be challenging to remember the values of community and the sense of belonging that lives in the current of peaceful times. Through gratitude, however, we can take a moment to acknowledge what we have and what we were able to accomplish and simply give thanks.  Gratitude in this way becomes a building block to strengthen the values behind projects and to reinforce why the work is important.

To balance your daily activities, invite contribution and then give thanks to those who participated!

Make a quick list of the ways you could show gratitude and reference it on a regular basis.  More importantly, put it into action!   Here are a few to help you get started:

  1. Acknowledge contribution and share the impact it's had on you, personally.
  2. Write a hand written note on a funky cut out scrap piece of paper.
  3. Bring in lunch one day or share your dessert.
  4. Create a space for feedback and listen patiently while they share everything, even the tough stuff.
  5. Share their good work with others and help them to shine in the eyes of another.

Now take a moment and create your short list.  Have fun with it, laugh and find more ways to generate a positive working environment. Giving thanks is a powerful way to build and rebuild teams as you develop your positive contribution to community!

What's happening in your community that you would like to give thanks for?  Please share with us!  We want to hear from you, click here...
